EPT Barcelona 2026 Preview: August 16 Start, and a €1,650 Alternative to the €5,300 Main

The WSOP just finished in Las Vegas. Europe picks it straight back up.

The twin-festival structure is back. Per the CardPlayer schedule, PokerStars Open runs August 16–22 with a €1,650 Main Event, and the EPT events follow. Two main events at two price points inside one trip.

For scale, last year: the 2025 EPT Barcelona Main Event drew 2,045 entries for a €9,918,250 prize pool, with €1,436,000 to the winner and 303 places paid. That was the third-largest Main Event in EPT history and the 20th edition of the Barcelona stop. The year before brought 1,975 entries; the all-time record is 2,294, set in 2022.

What this means for the rest of us

Here’s the comparison I haven’t seen anyone make: the WSOP Main Event field is shrinking while EPT Barcelona is growing.

Barcelona went from 1,975 in 2024 to 2,045 in 2025 over the same period that Las Vegas trended down. The buy-ins are almost a factor of two apart (€5,300 versus $10,000), but that gap doesn’t explain all of it. The real difference, I think, is total trip cost.

For European players Barcelona is a short hop. For Asian players the airfare to Barcelona and to Las Vegas isn’t that different — but August accommodation and food in Barcelona is far kinder than the Strip, and you can plausibly fold the trip into a holiday. Poker travel decisions are never made on buy-in alone.

Second, the twin-festival structure is the actual value proposition of this stop, and it deserves more attention than it gets.

The €1,650 PokerStars Open Main and the €5,300 EPT Main are more than three times apart. If your budget covers exactly one €5,300 bullet, you can fly to Europe, bust on day one and spend the next fortnight watching. Split the same money into “one €1,650 plus satellites” and you buy yourself several shots at a cash — and a satellite run still upgrades you into the EPT Main.

So my advice is blunt: if this is your first EPT, don’t open with the €5,300. Play the €1,650 PokerStars Open Main first. Same room, same dealers, comparable structure, and mistakes cost you a third as much.

The scheduling detail people get wrong is when to arrive. A two-week festival tempts you to book the whole fortnight, but the two Main Events are what you actually came for and they sit at opposite ends. Land a day or two before the PokerStars Open Main, play it plus whatever side events fit, and you’ve already justified the flight before the EPT Main starts. Arriving on day one of the festival and firing at everything is how people run out of bankroll before the event they came for.

A word on the €100K Super High Roller, since it’s on the schedule and someone always asks. It is not for you, and it’s not for me either. What it is good for is watching: it’s one of the few times a year the top of the game plays in a venue with public rail access, and standing behind that table for an hour teaches you more about bet sizing under pressure than any training video. Free education attached to a trip you’re already taking.

Third, on timing. Triton Jeju lands in September. If you’re in Asia and taking one trip this year, these two compete directly. My read: under $5,000 of budget and wanting a big field to run deep in, go to Barcelona; comfortable budget and chasing super high roller action, go to Jeju. The player pools are nothing alike — Barcelona’s field carries a visibly higher share of amateurs.

Where I come down on it

My call: Barcelona grows again this year, but does not reach the 2,294 record from 2022.

The growth pattern looks steady rather than explosive — 1,975 to 2,045 is 3.5%. Another year of that lands you somewhere just past 2,100. Breaking 2,294 would need an extra push, like a big expansion of online satellites, and I don’t see that signal right now.

I could be underestimating it. With the WSOP field down, if some of those players redirect to Europe the jump could beat expectations. That variable I genuinely can’t price.

One preference I’ll declare: Barcelona is the most amateur-friendly elite stop on the calendar, and it isn’t close. Not because the field is soft — 2,000-plus entries brings plenty of sharks — but because the schedule is dense enough that whenever you bust, there’s another event starting. Some stops give you the Main and little else, so busting ends your holiday early.

One practical warning: August is peak tourist season in Barcelona. Book accommodation early. That isn’t poker advice, that’s someone who got burned once.
